Perplexity Pro — what is Perplexity and is it worth the money?

Perplexity is a search engine where you ask a question and get a finished answer — with links showing where that answer came from. No more clicking through ten search results yourself. Perplexity Pro is the paid version and costs $20 a month. The question is whether it's worth it when the free version already goes a long way.

Short answer: if you look up facts several times a day at work — yes, often. Below we cover what Perplexity is, what it costs and what to watch out for.

What is Perplexity AI?

Perplexity AI is an American company based in San Francisco, founded in 2022 by a team that includes Aravind Srinivas, now its CEO. The idea is simple: combine an ordinary search engine with an AI that can read and summarise.

When you ask a question, Perplexity does three things:

  • Searches the web for pages that seem to answer it
  • Reads the best results
  • Writes a coherent answer with small numbers showing which source each claim comes from

The sources are what make the difference. A regular AI chat can sound very confident and still make things up. In Perplexity you can click the number and check for yourself whether the source says what the AI claims.

Think of it as the difference between asking a colleague who "thinks they know" and a colleague who sends you the links.

What can a small business use Perplexity for?

Perplexity is an AI search engine, not a writing assistant. It shines when the answer exists somewhere online but is scattered across many pages. A few examples:

  • Compare suppliers. "Which point-of-sale systems for restaurants are available in my country, and what do they cost?" — you get a summary with links in half a minute.
  • Keep an eye on competitors. Ask what a competitor has launched in the last six months.
  • Sort out regulations. A question about tax rules gets an answer that links to the tax authority, so you can double-check.
  • Prepare for a client meeting. Ask for a summary of the client's industry and latest news.

You can write in your own language and get answers in it, although the pool of sources is largest in English.

What does Perplexity Pro cost — and what do you get?

Perplexity comes in several tiers. The prices below are Perplexity's own, in US dollars excluding VAT, as of October 2026:

  • Free — $0. Unlimited standard searches.
  • Perplexity Pro — $20/month or $200/year. For people who search a lot at work.
  • Perplexity Max — $200/month. For people who want AI to carry out tasks for them.
  • Enterprise Pro — $40 per user per month. For companies that want control over their data.

The free version

Perplexity's free tier goes further than you might think. Standard searches are unlimited. What you miss out on are the more thorough searches — you only get a handful of those a day.

Perplexity Pro

With Perplexity Pro you get:

  • Unlimited thorough searches, where Perplexity reads more sources and thinks longer before answering
  • Choose which AI answers — models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, among others, in the same app
  • Deeper research, where Perplexity works for several minutes and hands back a full report, much like Deep Research in ChatGPT
  • Upload your own files, such as a quote or a contract, and ask questions about them
  • Spaces — folders where you gather questions and documents about a particular project

That point about models hints at something bigger: Pro effectively bundles several AI services into one subscription. If you already pay for ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro, you're paying for some things twice.

Perplexity Max and Perplexity Computer

Perplexity Max costs $200 a month and is built for something other than search. Since February 2026 it includes Perplexity Computer, an AI that does things on its own: writes documents, builds spreadsheets, sends emails and handles multi-step tasks while you get on with something else. In September 2026 automations were added, so it can start by itself on a schedule or when an email arrives, and connect to Gmail, Outlook and Slack.

It's the same kind of tool we covered in AI agents — what are they and how do they work?. Powerful, but not something to let loose on your customer database in week one.

Comet — Perplexity's free browser

Perplexity Comet is a web browser, like Chrome or Safari, but with Perplexity built in. It has been free since October 2025 and is available for Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android.

The difference from a regular browser is that you can ask it to do things while you browse: "summarise this page", "compare the prices in the three tabs I have open" or "fill in this form with the details from my last email". If you want to try Perplexity without paying, Comet is a good place to start.

Perplexity vs ChatGPT — which should you choose?

It's the most common question, and the answer is that the two have drifted closer together. ChatGPT can search the web too these days, and Perplexity can write text. But the emphasis differs:

  • Choose Perplexity when you want to find facts and see the sources straight away — research, market monitoring, comparisons.
  • Choose ChatGPT or Claude when you want to create something — write emails, rework a text, bounce ideas around, analyse a spreadsheet.

Many business owners end up using both: Perplexity as a search engine, ChatGPT or Claude as a writing assistant. To see how the different chatbots stack up, we've compared AI chatbots side by side.

What should you watch out for?

Perplexity is good, but not flawless. Three things are worth knowing:

  • Sources can be wrong. Perplexity summarises what it finds. If the source is an old blog post or an advertising page, the answer will reflect that. Click the numbers when it matters.
  • Think about what you upload. The terms of Perplexity's personal plans are not the same as a business agreement. Enterprise Pro promises that your questions and files are not used to train the AI. Don't put customer records or payroll data into a personal Pro subscription.
  • Copyright is disputed. Several major media outlets, including The New York Times, the BBC and Dow Jones, have sued Perplexity for using their articles without permission. As a user it changes nothing day to day, but it explains why the company keeps making headlines.

Does your business show up in Perplexity?

There's another side to this. More and more people find businesses by asking an AI instead of googling. If a potential customer asks Perplexity "which accounting firm in my city is best for small businesses?" — do you appear in the answer?

Perplexity picks sources that answer the question clearly, are up to date and are mentioned on other sites. At heart it's the same as good SEO, but with a stronger requirement that every paragraph can stand on its own.

How to get started with Perplexity

Is Perplexity Pro worth $20 a month? If you look up facts at work every day — probably yes. It can easily save half an hour a week, and then it has paid for itself.

Here's how:

  • Start for free at perplexity.ai or in Comet, and use it instead of Google for a week.
  • If you keep hitting the limit on thorough searches — upgrade to Pro.
  • If more people in the company will use it with sensitive information — look at Enterprise Pro.
