Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a topic that raises questions for many. But what exactly is AI, how does it work, and what can it do for us?
AI stands for Artificial Intelligence and refers to machines and models that can perform tasks that traditionally require human intelligence. This includes things like understanding language, recognizing images, solving problems, making decisions, and even learning from experiences.
AI is not a new idea. The term "artificial intelligence" was coined in 1956 by computer scientist John McCarthy during a conference at Dartmouth College. However, the basic idea behind AI has existed even longer, with mathematical theories from the 1940s, and thoughts about intelligent machines go back all the way to ancient Greece. So directly, no one "invented AI" - it's a concept that has evolved over time. Literally, it means artificial intelligence.
OpenAI is a company founded in 2015 by a group of entrepreneurs, including Elon Musk and Sam Altman (current CEO). The goal of OpenAI was, at least initially, to develop and promote AI that benefits all of humanity. OpenAI put generative AI on the map in 2022 when GPT 3 was released to the public under the name ChatGPT. It's the easy-to-use chat tool that many people today use and often associate with AI. OpenAI is currently 49% owned by Microsoft.
AI works by using algorithms and mathematical models to analyze data, identify patterns, and make decisions. There are many different types of AI today, but almost all AI is based on so-called machine learning.
Today's generative AI like Midjourney and ChatGPT are based on Large Language Models, or LLMs. It's a type of artificial intelligence that specializes in understanding and generating human language. We don't know exactly how this type of AI works, but simply explained, it's super good at guessing what the next word should be based on how a question is asked.
AI images are created using programs that use generative models, such as DALL-E, Stable Diffusion, or MidJourney. The most popular today are so-called diffusion models. Where they've trained the AI to show the right objects by making the image completely noisy and then gradually "de-noising" the image. As mentioned before, it's difficult to know exactly how an AI works because you train the model by saying "this image is good" and "this is bad" to improve the models.

AI has broad applications and potential, including:
For you as an individual, AI can be used for all sorts of things. You can use Perplexity to get better search results, have ChatGPT create texts for you, or Midjourney to make an icon you want to use on your website. The possibilities are endless.
AI is a powerful tool that can both help and cause problems. Risks include:
It's very difficult to say how AI will develop in the future. What happens when we achieve the so-called Super Intelligence? When people talk about it, some claim it could potentially be dangerous for humanity. But in my opinion, it's difficult to predict. As AI is developed today, it's not really a problem. But how it plays out in the future remains to be seen.
It's a common question in today's digital world. ChatGPT can write texts that resemble human authors, and more and more people are using these tools to create text entirely or partially.
You can use the tools below to see if a text's pattern is similar to an AI-generated text:
However, chatbots are getting better and better, and today it's easy to make your own AI that's trained on the data you've written and can more easily mimic your way of writing. With ChatGPT, this is called a Custom GPT.

AI is an exciting technology that has the potential to change the world. With proper use, AI can help us solve global problems and improve our lives, but we must also be vigilant about its risks. Whether you're wondering "who invented AI?" or "what can AI do?" one thing is certain: AI is here to stay and continues to develop.
